While the Dallas area provides plenty of exciting things to see and do, you might want to take a breath of fresh air and check out Cedar Hill State Park. The park lies less then 15 minutes from our BEST WESTERN PLUS Duncanville/Dallas hotel. This North Texas gem features year round activities that are suited to all types of outdoor enthusiasts.
Birdwatching
Calling all birdwatchers! Cedar Hill State Park is a birdwatchers paradise, with year-round viewing of a diverse collection of birds (more then 200 species!). The most popular bird, the Painted Bunting, is best viewed from early May until August. Other interesting migratory species include the yellow-billed cuckoo, the chuck-will’s widow, American kestrel, yellow-rumped warbler, and more. The park also features resident birds as well such as the roadrunners, hawks, owls, and vultures.
Family Fun
The Cedar Hill State park covers over 1800 acres, and features over 200 picnic sites with tables and grills. Most picnic sites are nearby the swimming area, which is a great way to beat the heat! No lifeguards on duty, so be sure to practice water safety when enjoying the lake. Kids will love the three playgrounds located in the park as well.
Mountain Biking
One of the premier North Texas trail systems lies in Cedar Hill State Park. Brought to you by the folks at the Dallas Off-Road Biking Association (DORBA), this trail network features over 1200 acres of fantastic terrain for all riders and features over 15 miles of trail. The trails are closed after heavy rainfall, so be sure to check ahead by calling 971.291.3900 if you’re uncertain about the conditions.
Boating
Looking to get out on the water? Cedar Hill State Park features two large concrete boat ramps for launching watercraft easily. Don’t have a boat? You needn’t worry, you can rent two-person kayaks (March-October), making the boating opportunities available to everyone.
